India and Türkiye have a civilisational relationship stretching centuries, formalised in diplomatic ties in 1948. Trade has grown to over USD 8 billion, making Türkiye an important economic partner. However, political relations are complicated by Türkiye's consistent support for Pakistan on Kashmir in international forums, statements by President Erdogan critical of India's Jammu & Kashmir policies, and Türkiye's strategic alignment with Pakistan including defence cooperation. The relationship is managed pragmatically with trade and cultural ties maintained despite political friction.

CURRENT STATE
Where things stand, 2026
The India-Türkiye relationship is managed pragmatically: trade continues to grow, cultural ties are maintained, but strategic depth is absent due to Ankara's sustained support for Pakistan on Kashmir and deepening Turkish-Pakistani defence ties. High-level political engagement is infrequent and careful. Trade may continue growing but strategic partnership-level cooperation is not envisaged in current conditions.
