India and Suriname share one of the hemisphere's most distinctive bilateral bonds: approximately 27% of Suriname's population — around 160,000 people — are of Indian origin, descendants of indentured labourers (Girmitiyas) brought by the Dutch colonial administration between 1873 and 1916. This Hindustani community has preserved Hindi (Sarnami Hindustani dialect), Hindu religious practices, and cultural traditions over five generations, making Suriname a unique repository of Indian cultural heritage in the Americas. Official relations were established in 1976 at Suriname's independence.

CURRENT STATE
Where things stand, 2026
India-Suriname relations are warm and culturally distinctive, defined by the Girmitiya diaspora connection. Diplomatic engagement occurs at a pace commensurate with a small country, but the personal warmth between the two peoples is genuine and historically rooted. Trade is growing modestly; offshore oil cooperation is the most significant new commercial opportunity. The Hindustani community remains the irreplaceable foundation of the relationship.
