India and Luxembourg established diplomatic relations in 1948, and the relationship has grown into an important investment and financial services partnership. Luxembourg is Europe's largest investment fund centre and a major domicile for funds with India exposure. The ArcelorMittal connection — the world's largest steel company, headquartered in Luxembourg and controlled by the Mittal family of Indian origin — is the most prominent bilateral commercial link. Indian IT services, pharmaceutical exports, and a growing Indian professional community add further dimensions.

The India-Luxembourg relationship is anchored by three powerful strands: the ArcelorMittal-India steel investment (the most visible), the Luxembourg investment fund industry as a gateway for international capital flowing into India, and the Indian IT and professional community in Luxembourg's financial sector. All three strands are growing. The EU-India BTIA, once concluded, would provide an additional formal framework.
