India & Kyrgyzstan
SCO MEMBERINSTC PARTICIPANTITEC PARTNERCONNECT CENTRAL ASIA
India and Kyrgyzstan established diplomatic relations in 1992 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The relationship is anchored by shared membership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, India's growing education footprint through popular medical colleges that attract over 12,000 Indian MBBS students, and the broader framework of India's Connect Central Asia policy. Trade remains limited but both countries are gradually building institutional mechanisms for deeper engagement.

CURRENT STATE
Where things stand, 2026
Relations are friendly and stable, though the bilateral relationship remains thin relative to its potential. India's largest on-ground presence in Kyrgyzstan is its student community of 12,000–15,000 MBBS students, driving regular consular engagement. SCO provides diplomatic scaffolding for periodic high-level contact. Trade is growing slowly from a very low base, constrained by connectivity gaps. INSTC developments and Chabahar's operationalisation could materially change the trade equation over the medium term.
