Guyana holds a special place in India's diaspora diplomacy: Indo-Guyanese, descendants of indentured labourers (Girmitiyas) brought to British Guiana from 1838, constitute approximately 39% of the population and have dominated Guyanese politics for much of its independent history. India-Guyana relations are warm, shaped by deep cultural and ancestral ties, and have gained new strategic salience following Guyana's emergence as a major oil producer from 2019, with ExxonMobil-led offshore fields making it one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.

CURRENT STATE
Where things stand, 2026
India-Guyana relations are warming rapidly on the back of Guyana's oil boom and the enduring Girmitiya diaspora connection. President Ali has actively courted Indian investment in energy, infrastructure and agriculture. ONGC Videsh and Indian Oil Corporation are evaluating upstream and refining opportunities. ITEC cooperation continues, and the cultural relationship through ICCR and diaspora programmes remains strong. The relationship's trajectory is clearly upward.
