India & Fiji
FIPIC PARTNERGIRMIT HERITAGEDEVELOPMENT PARTNERISA MEMBER
India and Fiji share one of the most historically rooted bilateral relationships in the Pacific, founded on the Girmit heritage — the arrival of Indian indentured labourers from 1879 onwards. Today, people of Indian origin constitute about 37% of Fiji's population. India is a major development partner and launched the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) in Fiji in 2014, with Suva as its symbolic home.

CURRENT STATE
Where things stand, 2026
The relationship is in good health, driven by diaspora ties, FIPIC multilateralism, and India's growing Pacific development footprint. The 100-bed super-specialty hospital project is underway. The digital cooperation MoU (2024) and Pharmacopoeial recognition MoU (2025) represent new institutional tracks. Defence ties, though limited, are formalised and expanding through ITEC and naval port calls.
